Los Cabos Swimming & Safety
The Baja Peninsula is surrounded by waters on nearly all sides, providing plenty of beaches to take a stroll and enjoy the ethereal beauty of the Baja landscape. However, while many resorts and hotels are located on the beach, some of the stretches of sand are unsuitable to go swimming in the ocean due to rough surf, rip currents and undertows. The good news is that there are plenty of stunning beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling, notably inside the protected waters of bays and coves including Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas and Lovers Beach near El Arco. Up along the Tourist Corridor, Playa Acapulquito and Chileno Beach beckon with inviting waters that are generally placid and calm to take a refreshing dip. At Cabo Pulmo Marine Park, not only can you enjoy a swim, but you can also experience some of the finest snorkeling on the planet as hundreds of colorful fish swim along the reef and rocks just a few dozen yards from the sands. It’s easy to find swimmable beaches – just look for the green flags flying to dictate waters that are safe and sound. To note, pay attention to any warning flags that tell of unsafe waters, denoted by black or red colors.

Medano Beach
Considered one of the most popular swimmable beaches in all of Los Cabos, Medano Beach is situated smack dab in the hub of Cabo San Lucas which features bright lights, soft, white-sand beaches, and perfectly turquoise waters. Tourists are attracted by the waters, which offer a variety of activities including swimming, snorkeling, jet-skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Onshore, volleyball games are played around the clock while adventurous ones will charter a parasailing trip to get high in the sky. Playa El Medano’s electricity is contagious, as it’s the centerpiece amid hustling and bustling restaurants and bars on the beach. Vendors on the beach sell all sorts of wares, including everything from silver jewelry and blankets to sombreros and trinkets. Another fine point of the beach is the sweeping views of the rock formations of Land’s End, including El Arco. |
Lover's Beach
Known as Playa del Amor, or Lover’s Beach, this tiny little spit of secluded sands is probably the most popular and yet most sublime of the swimmable beaches in Los Cabos. Nestled between two prominent jagged granite rock formations, the beach is one of the most sought-after attractions in Cabo San Lucas. Don’t worry about how to get to the spot – the easiest way is simply via water taxi from Medano Beach across the bay, or if you have some ambition it’s a quick and relaxing paddleboard or kayak ride over calm, turquoise waters. Glass-bottom boats in the marina will also run trips to the sands, offering up a unique perspective of the tropical fish and marine life below. Snorkeling is popular here as marine diversity flourishes beneath the surface, while scuba diving the underwater sand-falls of Neptune’s Finger draw even the most accomplished diver to experience something magical. If all you are looking for is a quiet walk with your love and possibly a little bit of swimming to cool off, look no further. |
Palmilla Beach
Bolstered by protected cove shelters, Palmilla Beach in Los Cabos attracts sunbathers and daytrippers to come stroll upon the white sand and hop into the waters to go swimming safely at its Blue Flag swimmable beaches. Playa Palmilla hosts many events throughout the year. Daytime happenings involve watching local fishermen launching their boats for a daily catch of snapper and grouper, from which many times you can purchase the catch of the day directly from them to cook up at your resort or even at a local restaurant. If snorkeling gets your blood flowing, a wide expanse of marine life exists just below the water’s surface at the beach. Note that there are limited facilities along the beachfront, so be sure to pack your necessities. If you’re looking for a bit of seclusion and solitude, these are the sands you want to plant your body upon. |
Chileno Bay Beach
One of the top highlighted swimmable beaches in Los Cabos is Playa Chileno along the Tourist Corridor. Its draw is not due to the flashy and busy shores such as at Cabo San Lucas’ Medano Beach, but a more laid-back atmosphere permeates the area. The calm, azure blue waters are some of the finest in the area for engaging in snorkeling and swimming due to their Blue Flag safety rating. Visitors can spend the day in the beach, as well as wash off their feet and clean up at provided shower systems. Other on-site amenities include trash disposal stations, portable toilets and a lifeguard stand to overlook swimmers. Access is easy, as parking lots are available for anyone renting a car and driving to the beach. Many boat tours do run from the San Lucas marina, so if you are without a car you can always hop a ride for a day out sun-bathing. |
Acapulquito Beach
Playa Acapulquito is a charming beach located at the Cabo Surf Hotel, and is great place for those who are learning how to surf. This charming beach is very popular and attracts many surfers with Mike Doyle Surf School ready to give you lessons or rent a board. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, this spot is a great place to catch some waves! Just above the surf school is the 7 Seas Restaurant which gives visitors the option of taking a break and getting a bit to eat while watching the waves. |
Los Cabos Surfing
Known as a major surfing destination, the beaches of San José del Cabo are lined with proper spots to catch the wave of a lifetime. Surf breaks can accommodate any level, from beginner waves at Acapulquito to the more challenging breaks at Monuments Beach. At Cerritos, a surf school offers lessons to get beginners on a board and help those with a little experience learn the tricks of the trade. Prime season for paddling out is during the winter months when the swells pump on the shore. Check a local surf map to set your own schedule and camp out with a few friends to chase the swells. |
